Who we are
After living in Brighton for a few years as a disabled student, I had made lots of friends, but I knew no other chronically ill or disabled people living in Brighton despite my university telling me one in five people in my lecture hall accessed their services. I was struggling with my degree as my health began to deteriorate rapidly and I began to need carers, as a nineteen year old living away from home, as a disabled student, I approached my university about setting up a disabled students society and was told there wasn't a need for one... I made the decision to do what lots of people may have done and take to social media to find other people like me. It was there that 'a little poorly' was formed.
ALPB was established to tackle social isolation experienced by disabled and chronically ill people, helping build community and skills through events and meet-ups. We are committed to advocating for disability rights, access to care, accessibility in public spaces and empowering the disabled and chronically ill community. We are a support group aimed at empowering and connecting the disabled and chronically ill community. We are committed to being a safe, welcoming environment for all. Carers, friends and family are always welcome to join. We are happy to signpost people to charities and organisations who can offer professional and tailored support.
ALPB organises a range of events, including craft meet-ups, support with admin and art therapy. We are passionate about collaborating with local businesses and professionals who are also committed to boosting self-esteem and wellbeing. All our meet-ups are held in accessible locations suitable for wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility. We also provide a zoom alternative with a live transcript and closed captions.
